Tobacco ironing

Tobacco "ironing" at family Manevci in Prilep

Martina sent a huge surprise envelope filled with goodies and in it was this
vintage photo reprint. I love getting old black white photo cards. They are like a blast from
the past. It makes me curious about the story in this card, is this the end of a good day's work?
If I remember correctly, this tobacco plant is no longer in operation but the
building still stands. Thank you so much Martina for this piece of history.

Naxi classical music

Nakhi native music is thousands of years old, and is presently being energetically kept alive by He Wen Guang, who writes and performs Nakhi music in both traditional and modern styles. Another form of music, labelled Nakhi ancient music by its supporters, is about 500 years old and came from Nanjing traders who were encouraged by various emperors to trade with, live in and inter-marry with the Western tribes as a way of improving controls over the unruly western regions abutting Han China. Along with the Han music are included literary lyrics, poetic topics, and musical styles which are understood to derive from themes prevalent in the Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties. This music was played as a living tradition by the Nakhi long after it was all but lost in the rest of Han China. There are three main styles, relating to the location of the music playing groups: Baisha, Dongjing, and Huangjing, all using traditional Chinese instruments.
Thank you Wency for this absolutely beautiful card sent for my birthday!
Love the fact that the classical music is still actively played by this ethnic
group. Interesting stamps on here: Regional English stamp,
British, Welsh, and Chinese stamp (45th Anniversary of the
Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between Cambodia and China 2003)

About continuity

A beautiful card from a beautiful friend from Romania!
Thanks to Simona for this great card showing an old lady with her
spinning wheel and her grand daughter. This photo captioned "About continuity"
speaks very true on the current problem of traditional crafts being forgotten.
Also, you may not be able to see it on this picture, but the postman curled and
damaged the postcard, causing a huge crease on the picture :( I had to stick a huge
note on my postbox, "Please do not fold or curl postcards" seriously why would anyone curl a postcard to fit into a postbox!?!?!? this reminds me of my English teacher who once said,
"Common sense is not very common"

This studio portrait shows a young Cheyenne girl posing with a
doll. Her braids are ornamented with danglers. The little is
wearing a fine dress, elaborately decorated with many rows of

Baguette trip

France, Provence. 1955

Another black and white card in my mailbox today, showing
a man and his little boy out to get fresh baguettes. In my city
we have bakeries that make baguettes too but nothing like the
real deal, ours is hard enough too knock out a person and also
dense enough to make you fall asleep.
Thank you Caroline for this great card :)

Foster Tusler on Hog

This large g was not deterred from eating even while straddled
by frontier toddler Foster Tusler. The Henry T. Tusler family and
this photographer lived on adjoining ranches in eastern Montana,
and were former partners in a polo pony enterprise.
Photographed in 1902 by Evelyn J. Cameron

I always love it when I get an unexpected card for a theme I collect
of "people riding animals" or "black and white" images from the past.

I was curious about the unusual card Rob offered in the forum, after all people can describe one thing very differently. I like his sense of unusual because this is pretty funny! Pretty apt to coincide with the year of the horse. Merci beaucoup Rob!

Bucovina, Romania

Marius Vasiliu

Bukovina is a historical region in Central Europe, currently divided between Ukraine and Romania, located on the northern slopes of the central Eastern Carpathians and the adjoining plains.
Historically part of Moldavia, the territory of what became known as Bukovina was, from 1775 to 1918, an administrative division of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Austrian Empire, and Austria–Hungary. After World War I, Romania established control over Bukovina. In 1940, as a result of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, the northern half of Bukovina was annexed by the Soviet Union.

Thank you Marius for is beautiful postcard of your region! (postcard from photographer!)

Belle Epoque

The Belle Époque or La Belle Époque(French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in French and Belgian history that is conventionally dated as starting in 1871 and ending when World War I began in 1914. Occurring during the era of the Third French Republic (beginning 1870), it was a period characterized by optimism, peace at home and in Europe, new technology and scientific discoveries. The peace and prosperity in Paris allowed the arts to flourish, and many masterpieces of literature, music, theater, and visual art gained recognition. The Belle Époque was named, in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" in contrast to the horrors of World War I.

Sing me a song!

Old Javanese man and his bird
I love this postcard! Showing a past time of an old Javanese man
What's not to love in this? As you might have known by now I like
views of the past, as it shows a slice of that moment which one can't
recreate now as we don't live in bamboo houses or keep birds in
wooden cages. Nor do old Javanese wrap their heads in the traditional style.
Thank you Dedah Iin for this great card!
