Bus pass and my 3 day pass! |
While waiting for the bus back to Kuching from Bako, I overheard a traveller telling another that most Malaysians couldn't afford the pricey ticket to the festival and it would probably be full of tourists,
something which he especially wanted to avoid, how wrong he was! While it may be true that most
locals can't afford a full 3 day ticket, it does not however mean that they could not go for a day as there had been big discounts months before the event. Malaysians all over the nation throng to
Sarawak for this event, including moi, a hop and skip away from the neighbouring state ^.^

Staying at The Nook, new hostel built just in time to cater for the RWMF crowd. |

Never lost with this placed all over the Cultural Village |
|
Note to self: buy RWMF baby T on the first day or it runs out! |
|
Little potter! |
Over the three days, with Saturday being the busiest, it was the one day that most locals go on(Friday being too hectic to make it after work and the Sunday needed to recuperate after a wild Saturday nigt) you would be stuck waiting two hours in queue for the shuttle back to town. On all the schedules and passes it stated the last bus was 1.30am but the organizers had kept the buses running til 4.30am. They had to make sure the last person got back! For Friday and Sunday there weren't any queues no matter what the hour was you left the festival.
The Sarawak Cultural Village, the venue for the RWMF,was opened from 11am til midnight. I went
early the first day as I wanted have the full experience, perhaps even explore my hippy side. You must wonder, what could possibly entertain me the whole day? There certainly was no end to the activities inside.

Batik batik batik art! |
There are two different workshops; musically and traditionally.Think of flea markets but with a window into how things are done or made, from Top-spinnig to waxing batik or being taught how to shimmy with the Congolese, or how the men woo with Samba. With three different music workshops held at the same time, you really had a hard choice to make!

Zee Avi! Sarawak's darling, first workshop of the day! |

SAMBA!!! |
The colourful line up of the acts definately gave an aural exposure to the Malaysians and tourists, with the Mongolian throat singers, oud musicians from the Palestine and the party flava of the Czech Republic. It really seems like they got an act from every continent. No idea how they will top this for the next year!

Mongolian beauty and her harp |
The music workshops ran from 2pm-5pm and the concert starting at 7.30pm, with the downtime, one
could simply eat their way through the village as there was a whole plethora of choice foods, or
for me my favourite was the buffet at the restaurant just ahead of the entrance. There was ample
time to head out across to Damai Central where a different carnival like atmosphere was
happening. I only ventured across on the last day and kicked myself for not having done so
sooner as there was an amazing beach. At night it becomes a rave party after the music fest ends
at midnight.ah I want to come back again next year!

Can't have a festival without some beach! |
