Olavinlinna Castle was founded 1475 by Danish nobleman Erik Axelsson Tott. The castle served to guarantee control of the strategically important Savo region for the Swedish Crown. The castle houses a museum shop, restaurant and a summer café. Savolinna Opera Festival is held every summer at Olavinlinna Castle.
