Edinburgh

Historically part of Midlothian, the city has long been known as a centre of education, particularly in the fields of medicine, Scots law, literature, the sciences and engineering. The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582 and now one of four in the city, was placed 17th in the QS World University Rankings in 2013 and 2014.The city is also famous for the Edinburgh International Festival and the Fringe, the latter being the largest annual international arts festival in the world. The city's historical and cultural attractions have made it the second most popular tourist destination in the United Kingdom after London, attracting over one million overseas visitors each year . Historic sites in Edinburgh include Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars and the Canongate, and the extensive Georgian New Town, built in the 18th century. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town together are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which has been managed by Edinburgh World Heritage since 1999.

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier, commonly known as the Westie or Westy, is a Scottish breed of dog with a distinctive white coat. The modern breed is descended from a number of breeding programs of white terriers in Scotland prior to the 20th century. Edward Donald Malcolm, 16th Laird of Poltalloch, is credited with the creation of the modern breed from his Poltalloch Terrier, but did not want to be known as such. Other related breeds included George Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll's Roseneath Terrier and Dr. Americ Edwin Flaxman's Pittenweem Terriers. The breeds of small white Scottish terriers were given its modern name for the first time in 1908, with recognition by major kennel clubs occurring around the same time.

The breed remains very popular in the UK and is in the top third of all breeds in the US since the 1960s. It has been featured in television and film including in Hamish Macbeth and in advertising by companies such as Cesar dog food and Scottish whisky Black & White. It is a medium-sized terrier, although with longer legs than other Scottish breeds of terrier. It has a white double coat of fur which fills out the dog's face giving it a rounded appearance. The breed can be good with children, but will not always tolerate rough handling. The Westie is an active breed, but are social with a high prey drive, as they were once used to hunt rodents.

Isle of Skye map

Excerpt: At around 50 miles long, the Isle of Skye is thee largest and most northerly

of the Inner Hebrides. Its dramatic landscape is noted for rocky coastlines and

rugged mountains - especially the Cuillin Hills, which dominate the southern part

of the island. Skye is also steeped in a long history, including tales of warring

clans, and the flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Scotland has a land area of about 79,000 sq km,with a total coastline of nearly 12,000km.

There are some 800 islands,with alsmot 600 of them lying off the west coast, over 

30,000  freshwater lochs and 6600 river systems. Scotland's population of 5.1million live in only 3% of the total land area.

The Old Man of Storr

The Storr (Scottish Gaelic: An Stòr) is a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula of the Isle of Skye. The hill presents a steep rocky eastern face overlooking the Sound of Raasay, contrasting with gentler grassy slopes to the west.

The Storr is prime example of the Trotternish landslip, the longest such feature in Great Britain. It is the type locality for the mineral gyrolite. The area in front of the cliffs of the Storr is known as the Sanctuary. This has a number of weirdly shaped rock pinnacles, the remnants of ancient landslips.

Blà Bheinn,Isle of Skye

Blà Bheinn (also known as Blaven), is a mountain on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It is usually regarded as an outlier to the Black Cuillin. It is mainly composed of gabbro, a rock with excellent grip for mountaineers and scramblers. The name "Blà Bheinn" is thought to mean "blue mountain", from a combination of Norse and Gaelic. Whereas blå in Modern Norwegian means "blue", the Old Norse word blá could, however, also refer to the colours blue-black and black.

Kilchurn Castle

Excerpt: Kilchurn Castle seen across the calm waters of Lock Awe.

It was built in the mid 15th century by the Campbells and converted

in the 1690s into a barracks capable of housing up to 200 troops. The 

castle was abandoned after a ferocious storm in 1760.

The stamp shows the Victoria Cross, George Cross and Noorunissa Inayat Khan

from the Remarkable Lives Stamp series. The series features people

born in 1914, who would have turn 100 this year if they were alive.

Noorunissa Inayat Khat, (1914-1944) a British Indian dubbed the Spy Princess,

was a descendant of the Tipu Sultan of Mysore. She was a wireless officer

for the British Special Operations Executive in Paris in 1943.  

Thanks very much Tom, who I do a weekly postcard swap with,

 for the special commemorative stamps , I learnt something new about

an important person for the WWII French resistance.
