Volkonsky dolmen

Dolmens of North Caucasus (25,000 B.C.~10,000 B.C.) Concentrations of megaliths, dolmens and stone labyrinths have been found throughout the Caucasus Mountains, including the Abkhazia. Most of them are represented by rectangular structures made of stone slabs or cut in rocks with holes in their facade. These dolmens cover the Western Caucasus on both sides of the mountain ridge, in an area of approximately 12.000 square kilometres of Russia and Abkhazia.

Easter Island, it's always been a mystery how the statues got to the coast from the quarry. National Geographic recently had an article and it's been suggested that the statues were made to walk by swinging with ropes.

Stonehenge from the Air

Casting distinctive shadows in the megalithic monument of Stonehenge shows clearly its role as a giant sundial.

 

Than you Richard for this amazing card. I have never seen Stonehenge but I've heard now that it's changed as it now has an enclosure to ward of people like me who like to touch and hug and rub the stones >.< I'd do that just to say "hey I'm feeling this piece of ancient history!"

Menorca!!

Minorca or Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands located in the Mediterranean Sea belonging to Spain. Its name derives from its size, contrasting it with nearby Majorca.
The island is known for its collection of megalithic stone monuments: navetes, taules and talaiots, which speak of a very early prehistoric human activity. Some of the earliest culture on Minorca was influenced by other Mediterranean cultures, including the Greek Minoans of ancient Crete (see also Gymnesian Islands). For example the use of inverted plastered timber columns at Knossos is thought to have influenced early peoples of Minorca in imitating this practice.
In October 1993, Minorca was designated by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.

Wow what a fantastic card from postcrossing!

Why I find ancient sites fascinating stems from my enjoyment of my Social studies class in primary school. We got to watch Asterix and Obelix (and his menhirs) outsmarting the Romans,what a way to learn history!

As written by Antonia, there are a thousand archaeological sites on the island!
