East Village, NY

East Village is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, bordered to the west by Greenwich Village, to the north by Gramercy Park and Stuyvesant Town, to the south by the Lower East Side, and to the east by the East River.

The area was once generally considered to be part of the Lower East Side, but began to develop its own identity and culture in the late 1960s, when many artists, musicians, students and hippies began to move into the area, attracted by cheap rents and the base of Beatniks who had lived there since the 1950s. The neighborhood has become a center of the counterculture in New York, and is known as the birthplace and historical home of many artistic movements, including punk rock and the Nuyorican literary movement. It has also been the site of protests and riots.

East Village is still known for its diverse community, vibrant nightlife and artistic sensibility, although in recent decades it has been argued that gentrification has changed the character of the neighborhood.

Penang Street art

One of the street art murals from the works of Ernest Zacharevic, who was commissioned

by the Georgetown Festival 2012. Thanks to a friend who was visiting Penang

for this awesome postcard!

Old uncle with coffee cup

In Malaysia, we call elderly men "uncle" as a sign of respect, eventhough

they are not related to us. This street art was almost erased by the local 

municipality in Ipoh, Perak, as it had a resemblance to a former communist 

leader called Chin Peng.  

Ipoh town is famous for their brand of roasted coffee called Ipoh White Coffee, 

which comes from their different roasting method. Ernest Zacharevic 

who made Penang more colourful with his street art has painted a few new 

murals in Ipoh. Can't wait to see more of them!

Red Balloon

The red balloon of Hope possibly associated with Banksy

My first card of street art. I'm not an art person but I think 

some of the street art can be rather funny or carry a political message,

reflecting the creativity of the people. I saw many in Thessaloniki 

and Sevilla some as big as an entire building.
