Saifukuji Kaisando is an old Soto Zen Buddhist temple established in 1534. The ceiling of the main hall, Kaisando, bears the work of Ishikawa Uncho who was active during the late Edo period and is known as the “Michelangelo of Echigo”. The wood carvings were painted with mineral paints after completion.
